The Department of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition within the Faculty of Agriculture at Ondokuz Mayıs University was established in 1991. Following the university’s request dated 27.02.1992 for student admission, which was approved by the Executive Board of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) at its meeting on 11.03.1992, the department began its educational activities in the 1992–93 academic year by admitting its first cohort of 30 students.
Established to encompass the disciplines of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition, the department offers education at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Projects are carried out to address existing issues related to the country’s soils and plant production, and solutions are actively developed. Experts trained in various scientific fields successfully conduct numerous nationally and internationally funded projects.
With its modern laboratories, experimental fields, and greenhouses, the department has the facilities necessary to conduct these research activities. The results obtained from these studies are communicated not only through publications but also through various events periodically organized—such as congresses, symposia, workshops, seminars, and farmer meetings—to scientists, public and private institutions, and farmers working in the relevant field.
The department’s laboratories are open to public and private institutions as well as farmers and provide consultancy services based on soil, plant, water, and fertilizer analyses, including soil fertility and fertilization recommendations. In addition, services related to soil survey–mapping and remote sensing are also offered.
